Abstract

The electric power industry is a crucial part of the coal ecosystem, accounting for the large majority of the total coal production sold within the United States. This report provides a detailed examination of the economic impact of changes in electric power generation in Appalachia over the past decade. We begin in Chapter 1 with an overview of the industry, paying special attention to coal-fired power generation. In Chapter 2, we estimate the effect of a loss of a power plant on county economic outcomes. Last, in Chapter 3, we examine the risk factors for further power plant retirements.
