Description

Cooksonia caledonica, and the rest of its genus is the oldest plant known to have the beginnings of a vascular system. The earliest Cooksonia dates from the the middle of the Silurian and continued until the end of the Early Devonian. This makes the bridge between bryophytes such as mosses and the more advanced vascular plants including the various flowering plants and trees. The vascular tissue in the stem of Cooksonia caledonica was an important evolutionary step that helped plants to further colonize the land.
