Abstract
Whilst looking through all the pictures I have taken while traveling over the years, took, I found a connection between the buildings I have photographed and the life of Clemantine Wamariya. Their designs, structures, and presence mirror aspects of her life that resonated within the photographs I have captured. Clemantine herself described architecture as a “world of symbolism” (p. 219). While most buildings and structures simply seem to exist without much care for appearance or surroundings, architecture and the act of constructing buildings is a form of art. When I look at buildings, especially museums, I try to see them as pieces of art that can symbolise conflict or harmonies. They can hold many different meanings which can be interpreted in many different ways that connect to many different stories or emotions, as well as the history surrounding it.. I will give my interpretation of the architecture in relation to the story of Clemantine Wamariya in The Girl Who Smiled Beads: A Story of War and What Comes After (2018).
