Abstract

This poster delineates the process of quality control for vendor digitized audio-visual assets from congressional collections and examines the significance of this practice for archives more broadly. The steps outlined include selecting items from the collection inventory, preparing and reboxing for digitization, and rehousing the original materials when they come back from the vendor. The creation of a quality control checklist and evaluation of each item is examined more closely.     Likewise, the poster quantifies the scale of this project; Given the size of political collections, the items were sent to a vendor to be digitized as part of an NHPRC grant funded project. During the QC process playback errors, distortions in picture/audio, potential copyright or privacy concerns, etc. are noted. These factors were deemed important for an items’ inclusion into the American Congress Digital Archives Portal (ACDAP) but are not specific to congressional AV materials. The poster also acknowledges future work including edits to isolate relevant clips and the addition of subtitles or transcripts, as the goal of the quality control process is ensuring the accessibility of valuable research materials within the ACDAP.
