I am a maker of objects. The objects that I create are made of many materials and take many shapes and forms. Ceramics is utilized as a primary medium, but many other materials including metal, wood, found objects, fabric, and paper can be utilized to create my formal, sculptural work. This work is inspired by the colors, shapes and patterns that I observe around me, both man-made and natural. Influences include patterns, forms, and colors found in architecture, plants, and many other sources. To create this work in ceramics, I use hand-building techniques of rolling coils, and pinching them together to make shapes, and utilize paint to finish the surface. These forms embrace pattern and repetition, also found in many of my visual references. As a result of this repetition, the building of these sculptures is a meditative practice for me as an artist. I am also a creator of fantastic environments. The second step in creating my artwork is to combine these found and fabricated objects to create formal sculptural compositions. I combine ceramics with found objects, and sculptures created in other mediums. Sometimes, I also draw within or utilize drawings in the space to create a more immersive environment. Much like a midwestern garden, or a landscape in a fantasy novel, the goal is to create an immersive installation for the viewer to experience. This installation serves to share the endless fantasies of my creative mind, as well as to provide a distraction from the normalcy and mundanity of everyday life.
