Abstract

A Cigarette by the Hudson is a collection of essays following moments of grief and recovery of a Southwestern West Virginia family. The essays discuss significant moments of loss in the author's life such as the sudden death of her 22 year old brother and the sentencing of an old friend to life in prison. Through the detailing of memories of cigarettes on porch steps in the rain and a hug through a drive-thru window, the author seeks to find moments of laughter and peace after all the pain.
