Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the concept of basic explanation particularly as it is discussed by Charles Taylor in his book, The Explanation of Behaviour, An exposition of Taylor's views will be followed by a criticisms of them in the light of a number of contemporary approaches to the issue. I will suggest modifications of Taylor's position to make it more compatible with these other approaches. Finally the importance of this idea of a basic explanation will be discussed.
