Abstract
The present manuscript is a study of the correspondence between Thomas Jefferson and Philip Mazzei, an Italian emigrant.
Being of Italian parentage, I was interested in finding out what Italians have done to aid in the development and progress of their adopted country. Therefore, Philip Mazzei was brought to my attention by Dr. C. H. Ambler, Professor of History, at West Virginia University, as an outstanding Italian emigrant who loved and served the United States. To carry on agricultural experiment work, he came to America just before the American Revolution, but was later sent to Europe on a special mission for the State of Virginia, to borrow money. The story of his progress and failure can be told only by the correspondence between Philip Mazzei and Thomas Jefferson, his dearest friend. That is what I have attempted to do in writing this thesis.
