Abstract
This study looked at the treatment effects of the Edgewise Herbst Appliance. Thirty-two treated subjects were compared to twenty eight controls. The subjects were compared at three different time intervals; T1-T2 (appliance treatment), T3-T2 (observation period), and T3-T1 (total treatment). Lateral cephalograms were used for the measurements. Tomograms were also evaluated of the 32 treated subjects, from T2-T1 to determine if the position of the condyle within the fossa changed following Herbst treatment. At T2-T1 there was a net overjet correction of 8.4 mm with 39.6% being skeletal and 63.1 % being dental. The molar relationship was corrected by 7.2 mm with 43.1% skeletal and 56. 9% dental. T3-T2 time interval demonstrated significant relapse with the majority being dental in nature. Final treatment, T3-T1, showed a net overjet correction of 2.7 mm with 85% being skeletal, and the molar relationship improved 2.4 mm with 95% being skeletal. The tomograms showed an anterior repositioning of the condyle within the fossa of 0.2mm.
