Abstract

Interactions of different nematodes with various biological control agents were examined in field and in vitro studies. In a field experiment conducted to determine effects of the bacterial biocontrol agent, Kodiakâ (Bacillus subtilis GBO3), on soil plant parasitic, predatory and free-living nematodes, no significant differences were found in the abundance of any nematode group among treated and untreated plots. Chemotaxis assays developed to evaluate the effects of Kodiakâ on the movement of the plant parasitic nematode Pratylenchus scribneri Steiner and the predatory nematode Clarkus papillatus Bastian detected no nematicidal or taxis effects. In another chemotaxis assay, bacterial isolates were examined as preferential food sources for Cephalobus brevicauda Penso. The nematode consistently avoided the bacterial biological control agent Dipel® (Bacillus thuringiensis spp. kurstaki) among other biocontrol agents in the assay. The predatory soil nematode Clarkus papillatus was cultured in vitro and had the highest mean reproduction at 20°C.
