Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of emodels when calculating a Bolton ratio. Models from 30 patients from the West Virginia University Department of Orthodontics were measured using calipers and emodels, and the time it took to do the measurements was recorded. Ball bearings were scanned into an emodel file and measured to evaluate whether any magnification was present in emodels. The difference between the two methods was calculated and a paired t-test was used to analyze the data. There was no significant difference between the Bolton ratios calculated using the two methods. There was a significant difference in the time it took to do the analysis, and in the measurement of arch length in millimeters between the two methods. When performing a Bolton analysis, emodels was found to be as accurate, and significantly faster, than the traditional method of digital calipers and plaster models.
