Abstract

This study compared the horizontal condylar inclination (HCI) angles obtained by use of a wax protrusive record (WPR) to those obtained by use of Mechanical Axiograph to program a semi-adjustable articulator. On twenty healthy subjects with delimitations HCI angles were calculated on the axiographic tracings with WPRs inserted in the mouth. The matched pairs Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed no significant difference between the wax and the axiograph method on the left side (P=0.270) and good correlation 0.59. However the difference on the right side was statistically significant (P=0.019) and poor correlation 0.17. The largest difference was 28° on the Right side with HCI of 66° Wax and 38° Axiograph. One subject showed the least difference of 0° on left side. The mean difference in HCI between the Wax vs. Axiography for all subjects was 20° with SD of 15°. When both side measurements were combined (40 measurements); Axiographic angles were lower than the Wax angles in 24 measurements (60%), Axiographic angles were higher than the Wax angles in 15 measurements (37.50%), Axiographic angles were equal to Wax angles in 1 measurements (2.50%). It was

concluded that, when setting the Whip-Mix semi-adjustable articulator in a healthy patient: Horizontal Condylar Inclination angles obtained using Wax protrusive record are inconsistent with angles obtained using Axiography when measured at one specific distance from the Terminal Hinge Axes. In clinical application using wax protrusive record (regardless of its accuracy) to set the semi-adjustable articulator will register the horizontal condylar inclination at a point remote from the patient’s functional range. However, axiographic tracings enables the clinician to measure the horizontal condylar inclination at the desired distance from the terminal hinge axes according to the occlusal scheme to be used, i.e., balanced articulation.
