Abstract
The focus of this project was on the development of a software tool for analysis of crime data at the West Virginia State Police Forensics Laboratory (WVSPFL). The tool enables users to conduct statistical analysis on criminal activity; in addition, data mining methods are implemented to identify possible crime patterns. A Crime database was implemented; it contains information on incidents submitted to WVSPFL over the last fifteen years. The WVSPFL database was integrated with a hypothetical conviction database. Such integration enables law enforcement agencies to track crime from occurrences to conviction. It is anticipated that data mining methods will assist law enforcement agencies in anticipating possible criminal activity. The software front-end was implemented in ASP.NET 2.0 which is Microsoft’s latest technology for web application development with SQL Server 2005 as the database.
