Abstract
The first Great Awakening was a series of revivals which spread through England’s mainland colonies in the mid eighteenth century. These revivals sparked the growth of sects, such as Baptists and Quakers who believed in religious freedom and separation of church and state. The growth of these sects brought a greater religious diversity, which led individuals to realize it was possible to live peacefully in a religiously diverse society. This realization led to futher demands for religious liberty and separation of church and state.
