Abstract

In this thesis, you will read how I used a specific actor’s tool of analysis, called “The Three ‘I’s,” to create the character of Marcus Hubbard in WVU’s production of Lillian Hellman’s Another Part of the Forest . This technique consists of using “Investigation,” “Inference” and “Invention” to create a biography of the character. This is done so that the actor may know all of the major events in the character’s life, even those not seemingly important to the story of the play. These events shape the character and give him a foundation for the motivations that make him do what he does. In this thesis, you will read excerpts from the invented biography of Marcus Hubbard, as well as how the portrayal of specific scenes in the play were affected by this fictional history. Finally, you will read how the use of this technique in this role helped me to achieve a new level of catharsis in my craft.
