Abstract
’85 Flood is a series of connected stories that starts around the floodwaters of 1985 and spans to 2012. All of the characters are in debt, like Hank Ward who is both a debtor and muscle for a loan shark, James Hill who is beat up outside a bar and his wedding band from his failed marriage is taken as collateral, and Alec Price who flees Texas with his young daughter to escape ruthless crooks. Some characters have emotional debt. The Millers never quite escape the death of their patriarch, living off his land long after he‟s gone. Husband and wife, Leon and Aless Ward, both grapple with the loss of their fathers and try to make it up to their own children. Seraph Johnston and Jake Hurst grow up with the persistent memories of their mishaps of youth that they carry with them into adulthood. All of the characters have some form of debt to be paid and some memory to destroy before it destroys them.
