Abstract
Urban waterfronts are critical assets for cities, offering opportunities for ecological restoration, public engagement, and multi-modal transportation. However, many riverfronts remain underutilized due to infrastructure barriers and lack of accessibility.
Pittsburgh’s riverfront is dynamic asset that supports recreation, cultural expression, and community interaction. The Three River Heritage Trail Loop, a visionary project led by River Life over the past 20 years, seeks to connect diverse neighborhoods and natural assets along the city’s rivers. At the heart of this initiative is the West End Bridge, serving as the bookend and a pivotal gateway to complete the loop and critical link for bridging the West End gap.
This thesis explores how transforming the West End Bridge can complete the loop and create direct, engaging connections between the West End and Manchester communities, as well as provide access to regional trails and a vibrant riverfront.
By analyzing current conditions, stakeholder aspirations, and best practices in riverfront regeneration, sustainable design, and multi-Use connectivity, this research proposes strategic interventions that prioritize connecting people to the riverfront. Key solutions include expanding pedestrian and bicycle pathways, integrating public spaces and green infrastructure, and activating underutilized areas with recreational and cultural amenities. These design strategies aim to transform the bridge into a multi-Use gateway that not only improves physical access but also invites communities to engage in the diverse activities offered along the riverfront.
Key words: Urban waterfront, riverfront revitalization, multi-Use connectivity, sustainable design, public engagement, green infrastructure.
