Abstract
A teacher is pressured by his family and country town into enlisting to fight in the First World War despite his belief that it is not Australia's fight. After joining with his older brother, he is thrust into the vicious fighting at Messines and Passchendaele that engulfed British and dominion forces in 1917 in Belgium.
