Abstract
Lodi is a Realist novel set in the fictional rustbelt town of Lodi, Ohio. It employs shifting points of view and a braided narrative structure and addresses the impact of declining industry on communities, families, and individuals, by following four blue-collar characters and the different (often self-destructive) ways they each deal with a fatal accident that occurs in the abandoned Lodi Steel Mill. The critical introduction examines the techniques contemporary "novels of work" use to deal with the subject of economic decline while avoiding polemic.
