Abstract

Set in the deep South during the 1980's and 90's, the essays in this collection are, in large part, about coming of age as characterized by the pursuit of self-awareness--the very process that produced and conveys them. However, they also attempt to demonstrate how that process is facilitated by considerations of gender, class, race, sexuality, religion and history in small town Georgia. Part memoir, part criticism and part philosophy, I have here attempted to honor the genre's origins through an exploratory, contemporary performance.
