Lost Nation

Abstract

Lost Nation is a small Maine town where nothing much happens and people don't much care what the future holds. The novel follows the stories of three people who are directionless but driven to figure out their roles in the world: Libby, a young bartender who never considered her future until her twin and best friend, David, killed himself; Elijah, a drifter who lives in the mountains and steals from peoples' camps to survive; and Virginia, a teen who runs away from home when she finds her mother dead of an overdose. Over the course of a harsh winter, the novel follows how these characters meet and the ways they push each other to consider their own lives, dissatisfactions, and finally the possibilities the future holds for them.
