Abstract
"Don't Disturb the Growing Grass" is a collection of creative nonfiction essays that center on the themes of journey and self-growth. The topics of the essays alternate between the Chinese language, the Ursuline charism, and family history. The unique traditions of modern China and consecrated religious life prompt questions about home and identity as the narrator learns to navigate a world beyond the predictable patterns of a suburban childhood. Alternatively, the essays about family explore the narrator's ancestral roots and family traditions in order to establish a grounded sense of self and sisterhood.
