Abstract
Black Walnuts and Other Stories is a two-part collection of short stories that stand on the border of poetry and prose. The writing favors images, detail, and quickly evoked characters over a lengthy plot. Part I, set in Appalachia, is the beginning of a short-story cycle that explores themes of family, loss, identity, and grief. Part II is comprised of three stand-alone short stories and a series of interconnected vignettes on longing and redemption.
