Abstract
We All Run in Circles is a collection of eleven essays centered on themes of community and belonging. Whether in family, in faith, or at a “mega-rave” in Michigan, the author grapples with a sense of duty and his own desire to be a part of something larger than himself. While the collection traces his mother’s illness and death, each essay serves as a kind of comparative character study, tracing the author against a backdrop of festivals, community organizations, bar patrons, quirky relatives, and the void itself—death. The collection weaves careful research with vignettes and personal narratives to tell a universal story of loss against an Appalachian landscape.
