Abstract

The Herbarium a t West V irg in ia U n iv e rs ity has accum ulated a c o lle c tio n o f approxim ately te n thousand p ackets o f mosses c o lle c te d from West V irg in ia over a p e rio d of e ig h ty y e a rs. S everal taxonom ic papers have been p u b lish ed about t h i s group o f p la n ts b u t none c o n so lid a te s a l l th e in fo rm atio n concerning th e c l a s s i ­ f i c a t i o n and d is tr ib u tio n of th e se mosses. Specimens d a tin g back to 1891 were examined and checked, and nom enclatural changes were made. F ie ld t r i p s were conducted and more specimens c o lle c te d . F o rty -fo u r f a m ilie s , one hundred and elev en gen era, and two hundred seventy th re e sp ec ie s have b een c a ta lo g u e d . A b r i e f d e s c r i p t i o n i s g iv e n f o r each s p e c i e s as w e ll as fo r th e o th e r c a te g o rie s in clu d ed in th is work. Keys w ere devised a t fa m ily , g e n e ric , and s p e c if ic le v e ls . This d is s e r ta tio n u p d ates th e c u rre n t l i s t of s p e c ie s and summarizes th e d i s t r i b u t i o n reco rd of each by th e county. I t i s p ro b a b le t h a t more s p e c ie s may be d is c o v e re d p a r t i c u l a r l y in th e le s s a c c e s s ib le p a r ts of th e range of th e se p la n ts .
