Abstract
The results of the acid-catalyzed (0.001 M H+ ) methanolysis of 30 are quite significant because they indicate that the methanolysis of 30 in neutral or basic media must involve the formation of a pentacoordinate intermediate by a pathway involving the initial attack of methoxide ion on J30, The intermediate then reacts with two molecules of methanol (regenerating a methoxide ion) to produce a hydrogen-bonded species which decomposes to products via a sixcentered transition state in a rate-determining step.
