Abstract
The Protestant Reformation caused a great upheaval in the thought of Western Europe in the sixteenth century not only in theological ideas but also in political theories. The challenge to the Pope's supreme authority in the Church was also applied to the authority of secular rulers. When a seccular ruler opposed the religious reformation, the Protestant reformers began to question his authority and the nature of his subject's obedience. This study deals with the workof one of the less well know Marian exiles, Laurence Humphrey. Since no adequate biography of Laurence Humphrey exists, this work seeks to provide such a biography.
