Abstract
This research document includes an extensive current biography of Lee Hoiby. A comprehensive list of Hoiby's songs with their dates of composition and revision is also included. Influences on Hoiby's method of composition are discussed as well as his approach to setting text. The analysis of style is examined in broad terms, pointing out characteristics commonly found in Hoiby's songs with examples cited. Eighteen of Hoiby's songs for high voice have been annotated with information that would be of interest to a musician looking for significant new music. In addition to the basic information such as range, tessitura, tempi, duration, and key, the annotations provide the text for the songs and a description of the setting with performance suggestions. The descriptions also include comments on the technical challenges of the vocal and piano parts.
