Abstract

The present study attempts a comprehensive examination of this problem. Its purpose is threefold:

1. To objectively present the etymological evidence, utilizing as many early dictionaries as are available to the writer.
2. To examine the repertoire represented by each term and discuss it in relation to the mainstream of Renaissance music, dance, and literature.
3. To provide a modern edition of over 200 vaux de ville, voix de ville, and vaux de vire.
