Abstract
The p re s e n t stu d y a tte m p ts a com plete exam ination o f t h i s problem . I t s purpose i s th re e fo ld : (1 ) t o p re s e n t th e etym ological evidence o b je c tiv e ly , u sin g as many e a rly d ic tio n a r ie s a s a re a v a ila b le to th e w rite r; (2 ) t o examine th e r e p e r to ir e re p re se n te d by each term and to d isc u s s i t in r e l a t i o n to th e m ainstream o f R enaissance m usic, dance and l i t e r a t u r e ; (3 ) to p re s e n t a modem e d itio n o f o ver 200 vaux de v i l l e , v o ix de v i l l e and vaux de v i r e .
