Abstract
The present study attempts a comprehensive examination of this problem. Its purpose is threefold:
- To objectively present the etymological evidence, utilizing as many early dictionaries as are available to the writer.
- To examine the repertoire represented by each term and discuss it in relation to the mainstream of Renaissance music, dance, and literature.
- To provide a modern edition of over 200 vaux de ville, voix de ville, and vaux de vire.
