Abstract
The purpose of this study is four-fold: (1) to survey the changes in the United States' policy toward Okinawa from 1945 to 1972; (2) to examine the changing balance of strategic and military requirements which influenced those changes throughout the period being considered; (3) to examine and analyze the bureaucratic interaction of the State Department and the military; and (4) to analyze the results of that interaction in terms of changing strategic requirements.
