Abstract

This qualitative study aims to make explicit the importance of school culture and teacher involvement in shaping and implementing reform efforts. Over the past 60 years, a variety of political leaders have led numerous education reform efforts. The importance of school culture has often been missing from the reform efforts. This study reviews the effectiveness of the Who Took My Chalk?â„¢ intervention and the six defining characteristics of the intervention: student engagement, collaboration, goal setting, action planning, assessing attitudes, and engaging openness. The data collected for this study include pre- and post- interview responses from school faculty on the six areas of school culture identified above. The data were collected from three participating schools. Based on the teacher interviews, this intervention can positively impact the culture of the school by providing teachers the opportunity to voice ideas and become active participants in the direction and plans for each classroom and the overall school.
