Abstract
At the present time, coherent optical sources exist as discrete components rather than as fully integratable systems. Thus the most pressing problem in the area of integrated optics is the coupling problem: How to excite and, subsequently, recover optical signals which are processed in an integrated circuit. This input and output coupling must be done efficiently.
