Abstract
It Is the purpose of this dissertation to study the piano sonatas of Nicolai Medtner, particularly with regard to the most distinctive aspects of his style. Concerning Medtner, Richard Holt states: "In the inner circles of music he has long been regarded as a composer of unique gifts, but in the concert world and amongst the musical public in general he is, for a variety of reasons, more or less a name and little rnore.1
