Abstract
The Fairmont coal field is on of three (Elkins, Panhandle, and Fairmont) in northern West Virginia. It is large enough to include all or part of five counties - Monongalia, Taylor, Preston, Marion and Harrison - and beneath its surface lie excellent and easily minable seams of coal. It is the purpose of this study to trace the development of the field througha half-century, from 1852 to 1903.
